Ball Mill Balls – Grinding Media Balls
The grinding ball (also called steel ball or grinding media) is a key part used in ball mills to crush and grind materials into fine powder. AGICO produces high-quality grinding balls for cement plants, mining, power plants, chemical factories, and other industries. With many years of experience in cement spare parts, AGICO provides grinding balls that offer strong wear resistance, proper hardness, and long service life. Our products help you increase mill output and reduce operating costs.
How Grinding Balls Work
In a ball mill, grinding balls work by impact and friction. As the mill rotates, the balls are lifted and then drop onto the material, crushing it. At the same time, the rolling motion of the balls creates friction that grinds the material into fine particles. The continuous impact and friction between the steel balls, the material, and the mill cylinder cause the material to be effectively ground.
Types of Steel Grinding Balls
AGICO offers several types of grinding balls. Each type is suitable for different working conditions. According to the production process and material, grinding balls can be divided into cast steel balls and forged steel balls.
Cast Steel Balls (by Chromium Content)
Product performance: No deformation, no breakage, lower wear loss, and uniformity of hardness from surface to core.
Based on chromium (Cr) content, cast steel balls can be divided into three types.
High‑Chromium Cast Balls
Chromium content: ≥10.0%
Hardness (HRC): ≥58
Impact toughness: ≥3.0 J/cm²
Crushing rate: <1%
Best for: Hard materials such as cement clinker, iron ore, granite, and quartz sand. Widely used in cement plants and dry grinding mills.
Medium‑Chromium Cast Balls
Chromium content: 3.0%–7.0%
Hardness (HRC): ≥47
Impact toughness: ≥2.0 J/cm²
Best for: Medium‑hard materials such as limestone, coal, and gypsum. Good for small and medium‑sized ball mills.
Low‑Chromium Cast Balls
Chromium content: 0.5%–2.5%
Hardness (HRC): ≥45
Impact toughness: ≥1.5 J/cm²
Best for: Soft materials such as fly ash, quartz sand, and silica sand. A low‑cost option for less demanding applications.

Forged Steel Balls
Product performance: Uniform hardness, Unbreakable, High wear resistance, High impact value. High combined efficiency of the grinding mill
Chromium content: ≥10.0%
Hardness (HRC): ≥58
Impact toughness: ≥3.0 J/cm²
Crushing rate: <1%
Best for: High-impact conditions, such as large ball mills, SAG mills, and coarse-grinding stages. Very good resistance to breaking.

Technical Parameters of Milling Balls
Hardness (HRC)
Higher hardness means better wear resistance and longer service life. However, if the hardness is too high, the ball may become brittle and break easily. High-chromium balls can reach HRC 58-65 with even hardness throughout the ball.
Impact Toughness
Impact toughness measures how well the ball resists impact and prevents breakage. It is measured in J/cm². Forged steel balls have impact toughness ≥12 J/cm², which is more than 3 times that of cast balls. This ensures they can withstand strong impacts without cracking.
Wear Rate
A lower wear rate means a longer service life. High‑chromium grinding balls achieve wear rates as low as 25 grams per ton of material processed. This saves money on ball refills and reduces downtime.
Diameter Sizes
AGICO produces grinding balls ranging from 20 mm to 150 mm in diameter.
| Diameter | Application |
|---|---|
| φ20–60 mm / 63–80 mm | Fine grinding |
| φ80–120 mm | Medium grinding |
| φ130–150 mm | Coarse grinding |
Diameter tolerance: ±1.5 mm.
Roundness and Surface Quality
High sphericity and smooth surface reduce energy loss inside the mill and improve grinding efficiency. AGICO uses precision manufacturing to ensure roundness error ≤ 0.5% and smooth surface finish.
Density
High density means greater impact kinetic energy and a stronger crushing force. Forged steel balls have slightly higher density than cast balls, providing better grinding output.
Manufacturing Process of Ball Mill Steel Balls
AGICO uses advanced manufacturing processes to produce high‑quality grinding balls. The main processes are casting and forging.
Casting Process (for cast steel balls)
- Smelting: Melt pig iron, scrap steel, and alloys in a medium-frequency induction furnace.
- Casting: Pour molten metal into metal molds or sand molds.
- Heat treatment: Apply specialized heat treatment (quenching and tempering) to achieve optimal hardness and toughness balance.
- Inspection: Check for surface defects, cracks, and internal quality.

Forging Process (for forged steel balls)
- Heating: Heat high-quality round steel bars to the proper temperature.
- Forging: Use air hammer or friction press to forge the heated steel into balls.
- Heat treatment: Apply quenching and tempering to improve hardness and toughness.
- Rounding: Round the balls to achieve high sphericity.
- Final inspection: Check quality before packaging.

Quality Control
AGICO tests every batch with rigorous quality control measures:
- Chemical composition analysis
- Hardness testing (4 points per ball)
- Impact toughness testing
- Ultrasonic nondestructive testing (UT) for internal defects
- Surface appearance inspection (cracks, pores, roughness)
All products meet or exceed GB (Chinese national) and ISO standards.

Why Choose AGICO Grinding Balls?
Strong Wear Resistance – AGICO high-chromium balls have HRC 58-65, offering up to 70% lower wear rate than ordinary steel balls. This means fewer ball replacements and lower grinding costs.
High Impact Toughness – Through precise heat treatment, we ensure each ball has the right balance of surface hardness and inner toughness. Our high-chromium balls achieve impact toughness ≥3.0 J/cm², exceeding national standards.
Low Crushing Rate – AGICO grinding balls have a crushing rate of less than 1% under normal operating conditions, dramatically reducing contamination and maintenance costs.
High Sphericity and Surface Quality – AGICO uses metal mold casting and precision polishing to produce very round balls with smooth surfaces. This reduces energy waste and improves grinding efficiency.
High Density – Our grinding balls achieve a density of 7.8–7.9 g/cm³, providing stronger impact and higher crushing force.
Industry Expertise – AGICO is a specialized cement spare parts manufacturer. We deeply understand the specific demands of cement plants, mining operations, and power plants.
Quality Assurance – All products are manufactured in accordance with GB/T 17445 (cast grinding balls), YB/T 091 (forged steel balls), and ISO 9001 standards. Every shipment delivers consistent quality.
