High-Strength Steel Ball Mill Cylinder for Cement & Mining Industries
The ball mill shell is the main cylindrical body of the ball mill. It is a hollow cylinder that contains the grinding media (steel balls) and the materials to be ground. The shell rotates around its horizontal axis, driving the steel balls to impact and grind the materials.
The ball mill shell is mounted on two large bearings. Its strength and precision directly determine the mill‘s grinding efficiency and service life.
AGICO has over 20 years of experience in manufacturing cement equipment and spare parts. We produce high-quality ball mill shells for cement plants, mining industries, building material industries, and power stations worldwide.

Structure of Ball Mill Shell
The ball mill shell is a welded structure made of thick steel plates. Here are its main structural features:
Cylindrical Shape
The shell takes the form of a cylinder. This design maximizes the containment space and the grinding surface area, ensuring thorough contact between the materials and the grinding media.
End Flanges
Flanges are welded at both ends of the shell. These flanges connect the shell to the ball mill heads (end covers) using bolts.
Manhole
There is one or more manholes on the cylinder (usually 1–4 doors, depending on the mill length and number of compartments). The manhole can be opened when the machine is stopped, allowing personnel to enter the mill to perform maintenance and replace manhole liners, diaphragms, and grinding media.
Manhole Frame
The manhole frame is rolled from steel plate of the same thickness as the shell. The manhole is then cut out from the shell, and the frame is welded in place for reinforcement.
Types of Ball Mill Cylinder
The product structure varies depending on the transportation and installation conditions.

The Function of the Ball Mill Shell
Containing Materials and Steel Balls
The ball mill shell is a closed cylindrical structure used to contain the materials to be ground and the steel balls. During the grinding process, the materials are placed inside the shell along with the steel balls, and grinding is achieved by rotating the cylinder.
Providing Grinding Space
The interior of the ball mill shell provides a grinding space, allowing the materials and steel balls to come into full contact and grind effectively. The ball mill shell size and shape have a significant impact on grinding efficiency and product particle size distribution.
Transferring Kinetic Energy
Through the transmission device of the ball mill, the ball mill shell rotates, enabling the steel balls to move and grind the materials. The shell plays an essential role as the core component of the grinding device.
Protecting the Shell with Liners
The ball mill liner is installed inside the shell. The liner protects the ball mill shell from direct impact and grinding of the grinding media and materials. The liner is tightly integrated with the barrel and also enhances the rigidity of the cylinder.

Selection Guide for Ball Mill Shell
When selecting a replacement ball mill shell or a new one, consider the following factors:
| Factor | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Mill diameter | Larger diameter provides higher grinding efficiency |
| Plate thickness | Approximately 0.01–0.015 times cylinder diameter |
| Material selection | Q235B for general use; 16Mn or alloy steel for high-wear applications |
| Welding quality | Ensure double-sided welding and certified processes |
| Machining accuracy | Roundness and concentricity within ≤2mm |
